Igor Hofbauer

Igor Hofbauer was born in Zagreb in 1974. and has been living almost whole his life in skyscraper block in new Zagreb.

From his young teenage life he saw some similarity between music and drawings by staring at some record covers he had.

After falling grade in school, his mother trashed his record collection but the images remained and grew in his head.

After quitting Academy of Fine Arts he already had his exciting net of incredibly exciting exYu bands so he was enthusiastic to jump in as a drawer (first as a b/w photocopied posters) and play drums in bands from trash pop to obscure.

He did dozens of covers, several comics, hundreds of posters and flyers for local clubs, especially for Močvara (The Swamp) a club that was closed earlier this year.

He is working as illustrator, living bum-like, but happy life.

Recently he played drums in bands called 'Merde sur la mer' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7uHpC4ttUM) and 'This Klik' (http://www.youtube.com/user/thisklik).
If you read this biography, also check out the bands 'Tigrova mast' (http://www.myspace.com/tigrovamast), 'Klopka za pionira' (http://www.klopkazapionira.net), 'Žoambo Žoet Workestrao' ( http://www.myspace.com/zoambo) and Gori Ussi Winnetou (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=166521604).

Other Hofbauer's works can be found on several pages of webzine Komikaze (www.komikaze.hr ).

Igor Hofbauer did realised the posters of the Bosnian, Italian and French editions of the Trasporti Marittimi Festival.

l’enfance rouge

france / italy / tunisia
enfance rouge
L’ Enfance Rouge / The Red Childhood. At first, a French/Italian trio, based in between Berlin and Borj El Khadra. More than 1800 concerts from 1995, from Vilnius to Tbilissi as from Paris to Siracusa. Avant-rock without boundaries, neither musical nor geographical. The European press talks about them as crossroads between introversion and acceleration, between cerebralism and wildness.
enfance rouge

TRAPANI ~ HALQ AL WAADY, recorded in between Tunis (TN) and Lecce (I), is the newest album recorded by L'ENFANCE ROUGE. A certain pan-occidental electricity melted with splendorous oriental grandness. An inventive synergy in-between larsens, feed-backs and these famous arabic quarter-tones. The arrangements are signed by Mohamed Abid, unchallenged 'ud master from the "Orchestre National de la Rachidia", composer and teacher at the "Institut Supérieur de Musique" of Tunis.
If the whole occident is to be closed again on itself, its musicians are getting internationalists. By specifying that on both sides of the Mediterranean Sea there was of course no will to carry out a fashionable and well-formatted world-music, nor oriental tourism or intellectual colonialism.
Trapani-Halq al Waady : a direct and short from-North-to-South line. Trapani is the last European port, Halq al Waady is the first Ifrikian harbour.

ON STAGE
- Occidental trio / the power trio version, astonish and telluric : François R. Cambuzat - vox & guitar, Chiara Locardi - vox & bass, Jacopo Andreini - drums
- Oriental sextuor: François R. Cambuzat - vox & guitar, Chiara Locardi - vox & bass, Jacopo Andreini - drums, Zied Zouari - violins, Hend Zouari - qânun & percussions, Wassim Derbel - percussions.

SOME PRESS CUTS
...the music looks like the Vesuvius after eruption ...This way to work electricity, more with a brush than with a hammer, is driving quite far the notion of musical violence ...In France very few musicians seem able to sign such a scenario... Les Inrockuptibles - F

...Extra-europeans grooves, occidental & ghoulish feedbacks, oriental & uncut quarter-tones. This new record is huge, but especially unique: nobody before succeed so honestly in blending these genres -and please don't talk about a Kashmir of Zeppelinesque memories. With the musicians of the Orchestre de la Rachidia from Tunis, L' ENFANCE ROUGE went much further, beyond the Western fortress... AD / TM#08

... You are in a trip, cradle exotic with instruments, and - BANG ! -, they awake you like rare into an electric rage worthy from the good days of Einstürzende Neubauten... But you can’t find any other more dorsal sharper than this North-south one, that comes a lot further into North and South. From one side: the oriental splendour driven by a ‘Oud master, and on the other a pure virtuosity of chaos, completely bursted out, between collapse of larsens and sismic ruptures…
Magic-F

…The UFO of the season ! This is the perfume of freedom... Libération – F

…Collusion of worlds dives us into a fantasy and unreal landscape, between urban shadows and desertic vertigo, between the warm languor of the arabic chant and the raw urgence of the European electric energies. A lucid and wild music. Mouvement – F

…Instrumentists who decided to overtake any genre of any time… La Repubblica – I

…Singularities that give a perfume to reactive compositions, soft and acid, for a dreamlike geography outside of the beaten track… Le Monde de la Musique - F

Thollem McDonas

USA

thomas mcdonas

Thollem Mcdonas, pianist/composer/improviser, was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area of Irish and Cherokee descent. Not long after birth he began studying the keyboard repertoire from the medieval to the 20th century and studied with many notable teachers including Aiko Onishi and Lou Harrison. After graduating with degrees in both piano performance and composition he decided to roam the west coast with a backpack rather than pursue a career as a concert pianist. He worked for several years in grassroots political movements and ecological restoration projects before coming back to music with his full focus. He is currently touring perpetually, back and forth between Europe and the States, mostly as a soloist but also in collaboration with many other individuals and groups.

Thollem's travels as a performer and teacher have covered much of the North American continent and Europe (he often leads listening and group improvisation workshops as well as master-classes). He has performed extensively as a soloist as well with groups. He is a founding member of several innovative ensembles, and is responsible, in full or in part, for many albums of original music on several different vanguard labels from several different countries. His music is diverse, with each album and every concert exploring a variety of approaches and paths, resulting in dramatically different outcomes.

Thollem is a recent recipient of a Meet The Composer grant. He was commissioned by The Limon Dance Company for a large-scale piece in commemoration of their 50th year anniversary. Last Autumn he spent 15 weeks playing 65 concerts circumnavigating the U.S. This September he has been invited to perform the late works of Claude Debussy on the piano on which they were written, as well as his own comprovisations with Stefano Scodanibbio. This will be the first album (They're Seen From Other Places) ever recorded on Debussy's piano.

Thollem has performed in theaters, art galleries, universities, elementary schools, concert halls, jazz clubs, rock clubs, festivals, warehouses, house concerts, streets, forests, riots and on television and radio. He has performed piano concertos with symphonies, played in West African drumming troupes, Javanese gamelan ensembles, an afro-punk band, with hundreds of free improv groups, and as an accompanist and a composer for opera and modern dance. His music appeals to a wide variety of audiences because of these rich and wildly disparate experiences. Currently Thollem Primarily plays his own comprovisations he calls Eccentriclect Music, for people and everyone else.

Mad Professor

Guyana / UK

mad professor

Just how sane is the Mad Professor ?

On the content of his character, and by the results of his recordings, he is one of the sanest record producers.

The name Mad Professor was first given by friends at school, who were amazed by the experiments he carried out as a youth.

Having built a radio and telephone system at the age of 10 years, it was no surprise that his interest and subsequent career in electronics along with a love of Motown, Philadelphia International, Treasure Isle and music of all types propelled him onward. The early Eighties, having built his own mixing desk, had launched Mad Professor along with the Ariwa Studio/ label from his front room in Thornton Heath. Early works include sessions with Ruts DC, Reggae Regulars, Merger, Jimmy Lindsay, Mikey Dread, Johnny Clarke and many more international artists.

DUB ME CRAZY, the first in a 12 part series of albums, was to become his beacon for the label. With an episode being issued every year, the titles all told a different story. Beyond the Realms of dub – Dub me crazy Pt2, The African Connection – Dub me crazy Pt3, and Dub me crazy Pt 7 – Adventures of a dub sampler.

The distinct variation and surprising sound effects were unique for this time. Dub, and the cool sound and clarity of his mixing encouraging many artists to the growing label.

By the mid - Eighties, the studio / label moved from its launch base of Peckham to Whitehorse Lane, South Norwood where it is still located. At this time he incorporated remix projects for the Orb, 400 Blows, Beats International (Lindy Layton), Sade and Brilliant.

A heavy schedule of touring Germany, Holland, France, Sweden, Denmark, Ireland, Spain Austria, Italy, Yugoslavia, USA, Canada and Japan, while still managing to produce the various artists’ projects was an enormous workload. The label by then had a healthy 104 albums with more in the infancy stage of planning.

By the mid Nineties, Mad Professor’s profile increased to legendary status After remixing Massive Attack’s second album, Protection. No Protection was instantly received by all corners of the globe, benefiting from Virgin / EMI international launch pad. Professor’s personal Dub tours were increased to be a major part of his schedule, along with further remixes which include: Clementine, Tracy Spencer, The Boom, Danny Red, Depeche Mode, Jamiroqui, Rancid, KLF, Beastie Boys, Cidade Negra, Perry Farrell (Jane’s Addiction) along with the Massive Attack dub extravaganza all benefiting from the Mad Professor touch.

Production work for various major labels include: Sony Music, EMI, Arista, Warner Brothers, Capitol Record, and Virgin Records.

In 1998 the Ariwa record catalogue contained over 155 titles including over 30 dub albums from Mad Professor, 3 albums from U-Roy including the classic True Born African, 7 albums from the Upsetter, Lee Scratch Perry and many classic Lovers Rock albums, including Country Life - Sandra Cross, If I gave my heart - John Mclean, Black with Sugar – Kofi.

By the end of the Nineties, Mad Professor’s Ariwa label gained international notoriety in many territories throughout the world. Mainly known for its Dub, roots and Techno / drum and bass catalogue.

The turn of the century saw new releases from Lee Scratch Perry – Techno Party, Macka B – Global Messenger, Mad Professor – Trix in the mix.

By 2004 Mad Professor worked with Sly & Robbie at Ariwa, where the Taxi gang laid down their versions of Ariwa rhythms. Over 100 rhythms were recorded. An album titled The Dub Revolutionarys was released by Sanctuary Records owned Trojan Label. Some of those rhythms also formed the backbone for the next album from Horace Andy From the Roots. Also released by Trojan, this is Horace’s third album for Ariwa Sounds. Around this time Mad Prof collaborated with Mafia & Fluxy to produce Dancehall Dub, as well as 2 Sci Fi Dub albums. From Mars with Dub followed by A new galaxy of Dub. By the year 2005 the Ariwa catalogue passed the 200 figure, bumped up by new albums from Max Romeo, U-Roy and young protégée Joe Ariwa.

Fresh demand for the dub show has taken the Ariwa Sound to many far flung places. In 2003 Mad Professor was invited to play at the Greenpeace festival in Manáus, Brazil. Since then, Mad Professor has become an annual visitor to South America, Playing also Argentina, Chile, and Venezuela, Australia, New Zealand, Estonia, Portugal. In 2005 the dub show played Seoul in Korea, driving several hundreds of fans crazy to the warbler sounds. Bangkok in Thailand in 2006 and Goa in India in 2007, courtesy of the Big Chill. the Mad Traveller also played Dakar, courtesy of the Senegalese govt. Mad Professor is also involved in the Back to Africa festival, an annual celebration in the Gambia, committed to the positive movement of descendants of Africans, back to Africa.

Vuneny

Vuneny was founded by musicians Andrijan Zovko & Nedim Cisic in 2003, following the proposal by Short Film Festival (Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina) to produce soundtrack for a cult mute film by Phillipe Garell “Le Revelateur”, 1968.

Andrijan Zovko has been the keyboard and machines programmer in electro-core band «Handle With Care» for the past decade. Nedim Cisic played the guitar for years in dark-pop band «Mara», and is one of the founders of Alternativni Institut, Mostar centre for independent production (Kolaps book publishing & music).

Guitarist and percussionist Asmir Sabic (known for playing in bands Alternativa Nova and Ultrared Orchestra) joined a newly established electro-acoustic trio «Vuneny» (the wool men).

In less than 3 years of existence Vuneny has played more than 200 concerts in 15 European countries, made 3 movie soundtracks, 2 albums, several multimedia projects & remixes.

Vuneny composes genuine music that has characteristic atmosphere with a sound that is both illustrative, expressionistic and scenario-like. It is continious and dynamic work in progress, searching new forms and collaborating with other artistic crossover forms, producing hybrid, loud, contaminated, melodic, eclectic, hyperstylized, powerful music.

Putan Club

Concert & video projection, music & instant-art-movie, DJ+VJing, Art + Action (France-Italy)

The PUTAN CLUB is a resistance unit, distinguished by a way of action near to the very first European partisans conspiracies during the last world-war (strength actions in diverse places) and resistants in Iraq, Afghanistan & Chechnya.

The resistance is organized with the archaic and immediate ways of our century : voices & electrical rumors, red chalk & video, pencils, action-drawing and ultra-spitted graphic, military tank & counted words, as to say from the fresco painting to the most daring conceptualism, from avant-rock to modern contemporary music to the most brutal techno/house, from the mouth kiss to the kick in the ass, and so on...

This is this synergy which give strength & power to the resistance: music + video + writing. So the places of action are plural: from the Paris art-gallery to the Bosnian squat, from the german museum to a Japanese club, from a Belgian theatre to slovenian bars.

The PUTAN CLUB is claiming a bakuninian action of agit-prop.
... hey baby, it's subversive ...
