Mame Coumba Bang, a goddess living among the people of Saint-Louis in Senegal. Where the mouth of the Senegal River meets the Atlantic sea, there dwells a volatile, shapeshifting spirit. For many years, Mame Coumba Bang has lived in harmony with the community. She controls the flow of the Senegal River, protecting them from the dangerous currents, enabling them to fish, even bathe, in these treacherous waters – but outsiders who do not pay tribute should beware. In a city that could be described as ‘ground zero’ for climate collapse, it is the belief of many that the constant flooding, lack of fish stocks and the rapidly eroding coastline are all directly linked to Mame Coumba’s wrath… there are few left among the Saint-Louisians who remember a deal that was struck moons ago, and continue to uphold their end of the bargain.
Mame Coumba Bang, une déesse vivant parmi les habitants de Saint-Louis au Sénégal. Là où l'embouchure du fleuve Sénégal rencontre l'océan Atlantique, réside un esprit capricieux et protéiforme. Depuis des siècles, Mame Coumba Bang vit en harmonie avec la communauté. Elle contrôle le cours du fleuve Sénégal, les protégeant des courants dangereux et leur permettant de pêcher, voire de se baigner, dans ces eaux traîtresses. Mais gare aux étrangers qui ne lui rendent pas hommage. Dans une ville que l'on pourrait qualifier d'épicentre de l'effondrement climatique, nombreux sont ceux qui croient que les inondations constantes, la raréfaction des poissons et l'érosion côtière rapide sont directement liées à la colère de Mame Coumba Bang. Rares sont les Saint-Louisiens qui se souviennent d'un pacte conclu il y a fort longtemps et qui continuent de respecter leurs engagements.
Mame Coumba Bang, una dea che vive tra gli abitanti di Saint-Louis, in Senegal. Dove la foce del fiume Senegal incontra l'Oceano Atlantico, risiede uno spirito capriccioso e in continuo mutamento. Per secoli, Mame Coumba Bang ha vissuto in armonia con la comunità. Controlla il corso del fiume Senegal, proteggendoli dalle correnti pericolose e permettendo loro di pescare, persino di nuotare, in queste acque insidiose. Ma guai agli stranieri che non le rendono omaggio. In una città che potrebbe essere descritta come l'epicentro del collasso climatico, molti credono che le continue inondazioni, la diminuzione delle risorse ittiche e la rapida erosione costiera siano direttamente collegate all'ira di Mame Coumba Bang. Pochi abitanti di Saint-Louis ricordano un patto stipulato molto tempo fa e continuano a onorarne gli impegni.
In Senegal, there is a traditional healing ceremony called n'döep. It is an adorcist ritual that treats depression. N'döep is primarily connected to the sea. It is also intensely musical and movement-based. A treated person will first see their senses overwhelmed by the immediate proximity of certain animals, buried with them under canvases, surrounded by drums (sabars) intensely played around them. The canvases will then be removed and the patient will dance and dancing at this point can be openly observed by community members. The person being treated will then interact ritually with certain spirits, certain animals because unhappiness or depression is considered to be a spirit which penetrates the sick person. The person will then sing and dance to ask these spirits to leave them, thus affirming that they will not forget them but will honor these spirits. Finally the community will dance together.

Au Sénégal, il existe une cérémonie traditionnelle de guérison appelée le n'döep. C'est un rituel adorciste traitant la dépression. Le n'döep est principalement connecté à la mer. Il est également intensément musical et basé sur le mouvement. Une personne traitée verra d'abord ses sens submergés par la proximité immédiate de certains animaux, enfouie avec elle sous des toiles, entourée de tambours (sabars)intensément joués autour d'elle. Les toiles seront ensuite retirées et la personne dancera commencera à danser. La danse à ce stade peut être ouvertement observée par les membres de la communauté. La personne soignée interagiera alors rituellement avec certains esprits, certains animaux car le mal, la dépression est considérée comme un esprit qui pénètre la personne malade. La personne chantera et dansera alors pour finalement demander à ces esprits de la quitter, affirmant ainsi qu'elle ne les oubliera pas mais les honorera . Enfin la communauté dansera ensemble.

In Senegal esiste una tradizionale cerimonia di guarigione chiamata n'döep. È un rituale adorcistico che cura la depressione. Lo n'döepè principalmente legato al mare, ma è anche intensamente musicale e basato sul movimento. La persona trattata vedrà innanzitutto i propri sensi sopraffatti dall'immediata vicinanza di alcuni animali, sepolti con loro sotto tele, circondati da tamburi (sabar)intensamente suonati attorno a loro. Le tele verranno quindi rimosse e la persona inizierà a ballare. La danza in questa fase può essere osservata apertamente dai membri della comunità. La persona curata interagirà poi ritualmente con certi spiriti, certi animali perché il male, la depressione è considerata uno spirito che ha penetrato nella persona malata. La persona canterà e danzerà quindi per chiedere finalmente a questi spiriti di lasciarla, affermando così che non li dimentichera ma li onorera. Infine la comunità ballerà insieme.
